New York City, New York (2011) - I ran across this just a few blocks north of the Financial District in downtown Manhattan. Construction workers recently had finished installing a new vent in the sidewalk above the Broadway subway. The yellow paint on the metal grate was still free of chewing gum and other gunk deposited from the bottom of countless shoes.

I saw the ‘VISION’ scrawled into the now dried concrete – probably from a nearby rock or nail. There were no other inscriptions– just the word VISION. It must have meant something to whoever inscribed it – with all the barriers that normally surround a new construction site. Someone desperately wanted to communicate that word. Interestingly, the image is lit by a reflection of the morning sun off the Freedom Tower.
