Minneapolis, Minnesota (2013) - Connecting Minneapolis’ Sculpture Garden and Loring Park is the innocuous, 379-foot light blue and yellow Irene Hixon Whitney pedestrian bridge. Every year, it carries thousands of walkers, joggers, and cyclists safely over busy section of Interstate 94. Designed by Siah Armajani, it’s notable on the structural-side for having three different bridge forms and on the design side for being covered with phrases from a commissioned poem by John Ashbury. With the short declarative statement “here it is,” Ashbury tells the story about the bridge itself, how it emerged from idea to keep pedestrians safe and came into existence.
